This week’s sign…
Customization. Create your own. Build a better mousetrap.
The tools are everywhere, with new ones magically spawning out of thin air every day. Trying to keep up with Techcrunch and Mashable is getting harder by the minute (kudos to both for their relentless coverage of what’s new in web 2.0).
Ning comes out of the shadows – welcome back Ning! I’ve been waiting to see what the Ning plan was. It took awhile, but it looks like they are on to something with their “Flickr clone”, “MySpace clone”, “YouTube clone” offerings. Perfect for the overwhelmed developer at small to medium sized businesses looking for a quick way into web 2.0.
Netvibes facelift – I have no clue where netvibes is actually heading. Is it cool? Yes. Cool enough to sustain itself against the likes of Google and Yahoo? Probably not in the long run. I smell buyout.
There are simply too many options vying for attention right now. Its almost like the auto industry, with 100s of car choices. Difference here is that the car companies have money to spend on advertising to reach a broader audience. These niche plays don’t. They rely on the long tail of the blogosphere to get the word out. Problem is that the word is only getting out to the net natives and their friends, many of whom have no idea what the native is talking about.
The tidal wave continues.
