The Edgelings are Lemmings too

Stowe Boyd is out on the edge… way out there. He says:

edglings are changing the marketplace by weaning ourselves from dependency

Little LemmingOk, I’ll buy that to a degree. We’re talking a minimum of 1% of the people here. Is that enough to “change the marketplace”. The argument can be made that the little edgelings (hey, I’m one!) are nothing but lemmings too. They blog, they long tail it, they technorati and Comscore everything they can get their hands on. All to make a point that what is at the edge will soon be at the center.

Doc Searls, who Boyd quotes in his post truly believes:

(Individuals) will drive market growth in businesses that appreciate how much more can come from independent customers than from dependent ones.

That’s why a new Walmart is built every 25 seconds and Best Buy is still the place everyone buys their electronics.
How big is this “edge community” anyway?
